Fernando Di Leo's Milano Calibro 9 is a true gem of Italian Crime cinema and, in my view, one of the most remarkable crime tales ever depicted. The initial installment in Di Leo's exceptional 'Milieu' trilogy, Milano Calibro 9 was succeeded by La Mala Ordina (also known as Manhunt, in 1972) and the outstanding Il Boss (1973). Although not directly related in terms of story, all three movies are outstanding and offer highly realistic insights into organized crime. Personally, I find Manhunt (while excellent) slightly less impressive than this one and Il Boss, both of which truly shine as timeless highlights of crime cinema. Milano Calibro 9 stands out as the best of the trilogy, a film that is exceptional in every aspect, whether it be the clever storyline featuring social critique, the performances, the gritty ambiance and tension, or the exceptional soundtrack. It is hard to put into words my admiration for this masterpiece, which undoubtedly ranks among the finest Gangster films ever produced. Gastone Moschin portrays Ugo Piazza, a resilient and enigmatic former convict just released from prison. Shortly after his release, Ugo is approached by members of the Milan underworld led by the volatile gangster Rocco (Mario Adorf), suspecting him of involvement in the disappearance of a large sum of money belonging to their American boss (Lionel Stander) who oversees organized crime in Milan. Milano Calibro 9 captures an incredibly authentic depiction of the criminal underworld like few others. The captivating plot is complemented by intriguing characters, a raw atmosphere, suspenseful action, social critique, and brutal violence. From start to finish, the film is simply spellbinding, enhanced by the exceptional soundtrack by renowned composer Luis Enríquez Bacalov and Italian Progressive Rock band Osanna. Ugo Piazza emerges as one of the most charismatic gangster figures in cinema, with Gastone Moschin delivering a brilliant performance. The supporting cast, including the fiery Mario Adorf as Rocco and the great Lionel Stander as the American Mafia Don, is equally impressive. The roles of the two police officers are portrayed by Italian genre cinema legends Luigi Pistilli and Frank Wolff (who tragically passed away before the film's release). Barbara Bouchet is captivating and incredibly alluring in her role as Ugo Piazza's stripper girlfriend, showcasing both her stunning beauty and acting talent in one of her most memorable performances. Director Di Leo infuses the film with political undertones, offering social commentary on issues such as corruption. Milano Calibro 9 truly has it all and exemplifies why cinema is so beloved. It is an absolute masterpiece in every sense and, without exaggeration, one of the greatest Crime films ever created. The ingenious opening scene alone is more memorable than most films manage to be in their entirety.
