Umberto Lenzi is certainly the master of Italian crime films, however; Syndicate Sadists is not one of the finest examples of his work in this particular genre. Lenzi's crime movies are typically superior because he crafts stories with a purpose, and they never lack focus; however, this film feels a bit too aimless to truly align with his other works. Drawing clear inspiration from Sergio Leone's iconic western 'A Fistful of Dollars' (which itself drew inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's landmark samurai film Yojimbo), the movie revolves around two feuding families and a charismatic protagonist at the center. The criminal activity Lenzi highlights is abduction, and we follow a character named 'Rambo'. Rambo becomes embroiled in the feud between the two families following the death of his brother due to their conflict. Seeking vengeance for his brother's murder, rescuing a kidnapped boy, and ultimately orchestrating the destruction of both families are his goals. The standout feature of the film is undoubtedly Tomas Milian. Milian has been utilized effectively by Lenzi in nearly all of his crime thrillers. The variety of roles he has portrayed for Lenzi is vast, and this one is undoubtedly one of the most impressive. The character goes by the name Rambo, which may bring to mind the famous Sylvester Stallone character - but surprisingly, the Italians actually used this name first as Syndicate Sadists was released before! As usual, the movie is immensely entertaining, showcasing Milian engaging in the typical assortment of car chases, gunfights, and brawls. This time around, Lenzi has him riding a motorcycle, making every scene with Milian on it a standout moment! However, the film at times feels directionless, resulting in a longer runtime than necessary. While Syndicate Sadists surpasses the average crime films of other Italian directors, it does not quite reach the heights of Lenzi's other crime flicks like Almost Human and The Cynic, The Rat and The Fist. Nonetheless, if you are seeking ninety minutes of action-packed chaos, Syndicate Sadists will certainly deliver!
